Watercolor Paint
Watercolor Cakes
Watercolor paint usually either comes in tubes or cakes. You probably associate watercolor paint more with the cakes. Watercolor cakes are hard “cakes” of paint put together in a palette. You probably remember using them in elementary school.
In order to activate the paint color you simply get your brush wet and add a few drops to the paint. You can use a palette such as the John Pike Watercolor Palette plastic palette to add some water first and then mix in the color to modify the deepness of the hue. By using a palette that is segmented, you don’t have to worry about your colors mixing.
Watercolor cakes are great for any level of watercolor artist. It is dependent on your own preferences. Unless you just want to experiment for fun, don’t pick up a cheap tray of watercolor paint meant for kids painting. You should get quality paint such as Grumbacher.
Watercolor Tubes
Similar to oil and acrylic paint, watercolor is also available in tubes. One problem with tubes of paint is that you can be tempted to use it just like acrylic or oil paint. It is not to be used as a thick paint, but you must mix it with varying amounts of water. As long as you can do that, tubes of watercolor paint will work great for you.
Use the tubes with your palette and mix the paint with water just as previously mention. Be careful not to squeeze out too much and waste your paint. It is a little harder to decide and control how much you use and need when it’s a thick paint instead of a hard cake.
As a beginner, you should start with this great introductory set. You can get a set of six or twelve and begin painting your watercolor pieces.
