Oil Paints



Oil paint is what many of the great artists used and use. It takes a while to dry, so you can manipulate it and work with it longer which gives it more flexibility. Oil paint is used on canvas.

For the Beginner

If you are just starting with oil paint, or especially any paint at all, you will need to start with a beginner set of oil paints. The Gamlin Oil Paint set is a great beginner set.

More Advanced

If you are more advanced, you may want to purchase larger tubes of oil paint separately to get more paint of just the colors you want. Georgian Oils are very good.

Oil Paint Solvents

Oil paint is a unique substance that you have to understand how to use. With acrylic and watercolor paints, you use water as soluble to thin out the paint and rinse your brush. With oil paint, you use oils such as linseed oil, turpentine, or another specially made paint solvent.

You can use a paint thinner such as:

Or you can use a turpenoid, which is like turpentine but is less harmful, such as:

Turpenoid Natural is a non-toxic brush cleaner and gentle brush conditioner which rinses out with plain water. Brushes are reconditioned when cleaned with Turpenoid Natural. It is non-flammable, does not irritate skin or eyes, and does not emit harmful vapors. It is an effective painting medium when used within recommended guidelines. Not recommended with Damar Varnish or crystals. Conforms to ASTM D 4236.
