Pencil Drawing Styles

There are many different mediums in art, from paint to ceramics and more. Pencil is a popular medium that can be easy to use and start in, yet it can still create beautiful and complicated works of art. You may choose a certain pencil drawing style or to explore them all. The following are a few drawing styles to consider.

Basic Sketching

Whether you are working in a sketchbook or starting a portrait pencil drawing you need to practice and start with a basic sketch. A basic sketch can consist of a simple outline of your entire work or some simple ideas you may want to take further later on.

It’s important to practice with sketches in between larger pieces to improve and hone your skills. If you are a beginner, you may want to take further later on.

Smooth vs. Sketchy

When you begin drawing, you develop your own style. You might blend until your hands are black or see thick sketchy lines. There is no right way to blend. Look at other people’s work. No style is the same.

Try blending away your lines if you are a sketchy drawer. You might like one look over the other. Find the style you like and develop it or continue to explore.

Black and White

This article is about drawing with regular pencils and no color, but black and white can be used just as lively. As you draw, you have to concentrate on contrast. If your drawing is all grays with little to no true black and white, it will look like a muddy, vague mess.

Sharp contrasts with the darkest black and the cleanest white with minimal gray will create 3 dimensional qualities and improve your artwork in pencil and any other black and white medium.

Stippling

Stippling is another style of drawing that is often used in ink, but can be used with pencil. It’s done by drawing with dots. You create darker lines and shading with bigger and smaller dots that are closer and farther apart.

Don’t let the style of drawing keep you from getting started. Grab a pencil and start sketching. Keep practicing and you will develop your own style.
