Colored Pencil

I find colored pencil to be very hard to work with. I erase when I’m drawing all the time, so I get messed up when I can’t erase colored pencil. I also have a hard time mixing and blending my colors with colored pencil as well as choosing between pressing hard or lightly coloring. This shouldn’t discourage you from using colored pencil because while I’m horrible at it, my sister is amazing at it and has somehow found a way around the obstacles that destroy me.

It’s a hit or a miss, so take your time

Unless you press extremely lightly with colored pencil, you can’t erase it. Even then, you won’t do a good job and you might cause smudges. This is why you should really take your time. Draw it out first lightly and detailed with a graphite pencil, and then layer in the color. Start with the lightest colors and work your way up.

Keep you style consistent

If you tend to press hard on your pencils, press hard consistently. The same goes if you are a light presser. It won’t look right if you mix, unless you are going for a new style or abstract look.

If you press hard, be careful of the sharpness of your pencil. If you make the point too sharp it might either break and cause a dark spot or make it streaky. Keep a consistent point. If you color lightly, keep it sharp.

What to draw with colored pencils

You can draw anything you want in colored pencil. Start by drawing what you draw in regular pencil. If you like drawing people, draw people. If you like drawing still-life, draw still-life. Just as with any art medium, you can develop your own style.

When you use colored pencil, use a high quality colored pencil. Look for soft pencils that are smooth. You can use a realistic style or abstract, whether through colors or shapes and design. Don’t let the variety of colors intimidate you and inhibit your creative potential.
