How to Paint with Acrylics
Acrylic paint is a very forgiving medium. It is great for beginner painters. If you are new to painting, I would suggest you start with some inexpensive acrylics. Still, this doesn’t mean it isn’t still a popular medium among experienced painters.
Fast Drying
Acrylic paint dries very quickly. This can be good or bad. If you work quickly using thick paint, acrylic will be good for you. Since it dries quickly, you can layer more easily without worrying about mixing colors unnecessarily or getting doughy, wet paintings that never dry.
Keep this in mind when you begin painting. Acrylic paint is water soluble, so when you paint begins to get too thick to work with, mix it with some water to thin it out. If you are a slow painter and you like to spread the paint thin while reworking with it later, oil paint might be a better choice for you.
Acrylic paint is water soluble
As I just mentioned, acrylic paint is water soluble. This means that you can use water to clean your brushes, and if you get it on your clothes, you should be able to get it out with a good detergent or stain remover.
Layer with ease
Because acrylic is fast drying, you can layer very easily. This also allows you to paint just about any way you like. Do you make a lot of mistakes? Paint over them. Do you like to use a lot of paint? Glob it on. You don’t have to worry about it not drying.
Remember, if you glob on 6 inches of paint, it will take a while to dry, but you could imagine how long it would take to dry if you did that with oil. Develop your own style and use precautions when painting to allow for drying and any time constraints.
Just start
Some courses will teach you different ways to paint trees, people, or other things using special brushes and tolls or they will teach you how to shade and mix colors. This can all be helpful, but when it comes down to it, the best way to learn is through experience.
Just start painting and you will begin to get a feel for how you like to paint. You might favor a certain brush or develop a unique style that has never been used before. Painting and art is all about creativity. If you simply follow the “rules” that creativity will stay bottled up and you will never create your amazing potential.
